Lawn grid mat fall protection guide

Fall protection lawn grid made of rubber granules - the fall protection that can be planted naturally! A universally usable fall protection covering for permanent surface greening including subsurface attachment. The special advantage of the fall protection alternative that can be planted is its flexible use on slopes or in slightly hilly areas. Compared to natural, loosely poured fall protection materials, grass grid slabs can be easily driven on with a wheelchair. Another advantage is the easy installation thanks to an integrated hook system. The positive connection of the individual elements ensures a stable overall structure. Lawn grids are also used on flat roofs, under playground equipment or in leisure areas.

INFO: Playground floors are subject to the Equipment Safety Act. The requirements for the playground floor are mainly regulated in DIN EN 1176 "Playground equipment" and DIN EN 1177 "Shock-absorbing playground surfaces" (e.g. fall protection mats). The European standards EN 1176 / 1177 stipulate that shock-absorbing fall protection is mandatory under playground equipment from a free fall height of 60 cm. Both critical fall height and shock absorption are extremely important. If an accident occurs on a playground because DIN EN 1177 is not met, the playground operator is liable and must pay compensation.

1. What are fall protection lawn grid mats
As the name describes, it is a lawn grid flooring that offers protection in the event of a possible fall or fall. Made from rubber granules, the mats offer permanent elasticity. Thanks to their shock-absorbing effect, they protect against serious injuries and are used where appropriate safety precautions have to be taken due to an increased risk of injury. Since rubber lawn grids reduce the impact energy in an emergency, they are traditionally used on playgrounds, in kindergartens, daycare centers, schools and also in private gardens. Shock-absorbing playground lawn grid mats offer optimal protection in the event of a fall. Furthermore, a soft floor covering offers a pleasant feeling of walking with orthopedic advantages, and due to its insulating properties, lawn grids made of rubber granulate keep your feet warm even on cooler days. The mats can be naturally planted with grass over 100 cavities.

2. What material are fall protection lawn grid mats made of?
SRP lawn grid mats are made from around 90% rubber granulate and 10% binder. In the run-up to the actual production, rubber granules are mixed with a polyurethane binder and pressed into mats. There are different types of rubber granules that are used depending on the requirements and wishes. SBR granules (styrene-butadiene rubber) obtained from old car tires are mainly used to manufacture the lawn mats. For example, black grass grid floors are made with black SBR rubber granules. However, black SBR can also be coated with colored PU binders, for example red, green, blue. Higher quality lawn grids are made from EPDM granules (ethylene propylene diene rubber). In contrast to SBR, EPDM rubber is colored throughout and is characterized by high resistance to most chemicals. EPDM lawn grid mats are also resistant to the effects of the weather, ozone and UV radiation.

3. What types of fall protection lawn grid mats are there
The square lawn grid mats from SRP are 100 x 100 cm and are available in 3 different thicknesses. With the 45 mm lawn grid mat, the fall height is 1.50 meters, with the 65 mm mat 2.10 meters and with the 100 mm mat 3.00 meters. The lawn mats can be connected to each other using a hook system. They are available in EPDM or colored rubber.

4. What colors are fall protection lawn grid mats available in?
SRP fall protection lawn grids made of rubber granules are available in many different colours. The usual standard colors are black SBR granules which are coated with a colored binder in red, green, grey, blue, beige, brown etc. With higher quality EPDM mats, the top layer (usually between 8 and 10mm) is made with colored EPDM rubber. The variety of colors now includes almost 50 different EPDM colors. View color palette here

5. How and where are the fall protection lawn grid mats produced?
SRP lawn grid mats are produced in Germany. The production of the lawn mats takes place in large hydraulic presses. Several special lawn grid molds are available for each individual panel, whether 45 mm, 65 mm or 100 mm. These molds are filled using a compulsory mixer, which mixes rubber granulate and PU binder beforehand. The two materials are then pressed into lawn grid mats with a specified pressure. The finished mats are then removed from the mold and stacked on pallets, packed and shipped by freight forwarder.

6. Where are fall protection lawn grid mats used
SRP fall protection lawn grids are mainly used on publicly accessible children's playgrounds, in parks, kindergartens and day care centers, as well as on flat roofs, in leisure parks, outdoor swimming pools and sports facilities, or in private gardens under play equipment.

7. What are the advantages of fall protection lawn grid mats
Lawn grid mats made of rubber granulate offer numerous advantages and many possible uses. The dimensionally stable, weather-resistant and frost-resistant lawn grids defy any weather. The permanently elastic mats made of pure rubber cushion slightly when walking and are therefore extremely easy on the joints. A sure-footed walkability with orthopedic advantages, for fall protection areas that require a shock-absorbing and safe floor covering including permanent surface greening, which, among other things, also minimizes the risk of injury and breakage. The rubber lawn grids are unbreakable and tear-resistant, even with large temperature fluctuations, and are also water-permeable. The materials used are harmless to health. The advantages in detail:

Fall protection including area greening
Weather-resistant and frost-resistant
Permanently elastic and easy on the joints
Risks of injury and fractures are minimized
Anti-slip even when wet
Resistant to breaking and tearing with temperature fluctuations
Water permeable, dries quickly after rain
Soundproofing and insulating
Largely temperature resistant
Low maintenance and easy to clean
No risk to health

8. What fall protection lawn grid mat thickness for which fall heights
The fall heights of lawn grid mats are divided into three strengths and are available as follows: 45 mm mats for a fall height of up to 1.50 metres, 65 mm mats for a fall height of up to 2.10 metres, and 100 mm mats for a fall height of up to 3.00 metres.

9. Fall protection lawn grid mats must be tested and certified
Of all the likely risks of accidents on playgrounds, the most serious is head injuries from falls. Consequently, the requirements for fall protection were regulated accordingly in the European standards DIN EN 1176 and DIN EN 1177. The standards dictate that under play equipment that causes forced movement (such as a swing or seesaw), a shock-absorbing fall protection floor is mandatory. Every fall protection lawn grid mat must therefore be tested and certified by an independent testing institute according to DIN EN 1177. TÜV-SÜD, TÜV-Rheinland, TÜV-Nord test lawn grid mats according to strength and fall height and certify them according to DIN EN 1176 / 1177. The simple formula is: the higher the fall height, the thicker the lawn grid mat has to be.

10. Are the fall protection lawn grid mats eco-friendly
SRP lawn grid mats made of rubber granulate are sustainable! The rubber granulate obtained from used tires helps to reduce the environmental impact of illegal storage or incineration of used tires - in line with the Circular Economy Act. The fall protection lawn mats can be recycled after their useful life. They do not seal the floor and are harmless to health.

11. Are the fall protection lawn grid mats permeable to water?
SRP lawn grid mats are water-permeable, so rainwater can run off quickly. Due to the open porosity and the hollow chambers seeded with grass, the fall protection surface dries quickly after a rain.

12. Which subsoil for fall protection lawn grid mats
Drainable (water-permeable) substrates such as gravel base layers are ideal for laying the fall protection lawn mats. Solid surfaces such as concrete or asphalt are not suitable.

13. How are fall protection lawn grid mats laid
When laying the lawn grid mats on a subsurface capable of oozing, an excavation of approx. 20 cm must first be excavated. Then about 10 cm of gravel with a grain size of 0/16 are to be introduced. The proportion of fines of 0.063 mm should not exceed around 3% by mass on delivery and around 5% by mass when installed, so that sufficient water permeability is guaranteed. The gravel layer (base layer) is to be produced professionally, level and load-bearing, as well as firmly compacted. Unevenness of more than 1 cm must be avoided so that the lawn grid slabs lie evenly. A non-weed mat that protects against growth is laid out over the entire surface of the finished base layer and filled with substrate with a grain size of 0-4 mm and a thickness of 5 cm. Then the area is to be compacted according to the height. Make sure that the surface is level and true to the profile. Lay the lawn grids in half formation on the substrate, completely fill the cavities of the lawn grid panels with substrate and then sow the lawn.

14. Do you need an edging for fall protection lawn grid mats
SRP recommends edging when laying lawn grid mats on subsurfaces capable of oozing, for example our elastic fall protection curbs made of rubber granulate. These are installed in a concrete bed on a suitable subsurface. The joints are in turn secured with system plugs.

15. How to cut fall protection lawn grid mats
SRP lawn grid panels can be easily cut with a sturdy carpet knife. In order to achieve a clean cut, the knife should be guided along a metal strip. The cut surface should be traversed several times until the cut piece separates. Curves can be optimally cut with a jigsaw (we recommend a Bosch serrated blade). A template should be made for difficult cuts, which is then transferred to a lawn grid mat for cutting.

16. How long do fall protection lawn grid mats last
You can confidently assume a service life of ten years for rubber lawn grid mats, but the mats often fulfill their purpose for much longer. Rubber lawn tiles are weather-resistant and frost-resistant. Sunlight and moisture, frost and heat cannot harm them.

17. How can fall protection lawn grid mats be cleaned
The fall protection area should be visually inspected weekly. Rubbish, moss or overgrown grass should be removed and grass trimmed accordingly.

18. Are there accessories for fall protection lawn grid mats
Yes, there are even plenty of accessories for lawn grid mats. This includes not only fall protection mats with system plugs, but also design elements such as fall protection block steps for the construction of staircases, fall protection palisades to secure slopes, fall protection edging stones for edging paths and areas, fall protection chain elements for sandpit borders, elastic fall protection -Rubber caps for concrete curbs, fall protection corner covers and much more.
